*** Featuring a foreword by Pritzker Prize Winner Shigeru Ban *** Bringing together experts from research and practice, Shell Structures for Architecture: Form Finding and Optimization presents contemporary design methods for shell and gridshell structures, covering form-finding and structural optimization techniques. It introduces architecture and engineering practitioners and students to structural shells and provides computational techniques to develop complex curved structural surfaces, in the form of mathematics, computer algorithms, and design case studies. * Part I introduces the topic of shells, tracing the ancient relationship between structural form and forces, the basics of shell behaviour, and the evolution of form-finding and structural optimization techniques. * Part II familiarizes the reader with form-finding techniques to explore expressive structural geometries, covering the force density method, thrust network analysis, dynamic relaxation and particle-spring systems. * Part III focuses on shell shape and topology optimization, and provides a deeper understanding of gradient-based methods and meta-heuristic techniques. * Part IV contains precedent studies of realised shells and gridshells describing their innovative design and construction methods.

Sickened by the contamination of their water, their air, of the Earth itself, more and more people are coming to realize that it is capitalism that is, quite literally, killing them. It is now clearer than ever that capitalism is also degrading the Earth s ability to support other forms of life. Capitalism s imperative to make profit at all costs and expand without end is destabilizing Earth s climate, while increasing human misery and inequality on a planetary scale. Already, hundreds of millions of people are facing poverty in the midst of untold wealth, perpetual war, growing racism, and gender oppression. The need to organize for social and environmental reforms has never been greater. But crucial as reforms are, they cannot solve our intertwined ecological and social crises. Creating an Ecological Society reveals an overwhelmingly simple truth: Fighting for reforms is vital, but revolution is essential. Because it aims squarely at replacing capitalism with an ecologically sound and socially just society, Creating an Ecological Society is filled with revolutionary hope. Fred Magdoff and Chris Williams, who have devoted their lives to activism, Marxist analysis, and ecological science, provide informed, fascinating accounts of how a new world can be created from the ashes of the old. Their book shows that it is possible to envision and create a society that is genuinely democratic, equitable, and ecologically sustainable. And possible not one moment too soon for society to change fundamentally and be brought into harmony with nature."
Here Chris Williams and Andy Croll, two distinguished historians of twentieth-century Britain, particularly Wales, marshal seventeen fellow historians to describe the momentous twentieth-century history of southeast Wales. The book is the fifth and last volume in a comprehensive history of Gwent/Monmouthshire from prehistoric times to the present day. Chapters detail the two world wars and deep depression that tested the resilience of the county's people, as well as how the decline of mining and heavy industry shifted the balance of the county's economy. Others analyze the life and leisure of ordinary people; their cultural, intellectual, and sporting interests; their religion, which formerly bulked so large in their lives; and the changes in the landscape of town and country.

"These Poor Hands: The Autobiography of a Miner Working in South Wales", was first published in June 1939. It was an instant bestseller, and its fame catapulted its author into the front rank of 'proletarian writers'. B. L. Coombes, an English-born migrant, had lived in the Vale of Neath since before the First World War, but only turned to writing in the 1930s as a way of communicating the plight of the miners and their communities to the wider world. "These Poor Hands" presents, in a documentary style, the working life of the miner as well as the author's experiences in the lock-outs of 1921 and 1926. It demonstrates Coombes' desire to offer an accurate account of the lives of miners and their families, and carries a sincere moral charge in its description of the waste of human potential that is industrial capitalism in decline. Long out of print, "These Poor Hands" has been recognised for over sixty years as the classic miner's autobiography.

This book is the first in-depth study of the debates over devolution in the four nations of the UK in the period up to 1939. It explores divergent trends and attitudes towards the principle of devolution at both local and national (UK) levels, explains the limitations of devolution as a political ideal and the inherent contradictions in the debates over devolution which were unresolvable in the period under study. The book also demonstrates the enduring potency of an all-British context and of the influence and power of those who wished to defend the status quo. It investigates the role of national - and Imperial - identities in the debates over devolution, highlighting the continuing value and importance of 'Britishness' and British identity as vital factors in moulding popular opinion and support for established systems of governance. In so doing, the book offers fresh perspectives on the development of nationalisms in the 'Celtic fringe' during this period and demonstrates the problems and limitations of such identities as ways of mobilizing political opposition. -- .

A Choice That Matters Every person has moments in life that turn everything upside down. Many times those moments force us to face things on our own; alone. The solitude can overwhelm us and create an internal void that is difficult to overcome. Or we can rise to the challenge of our circumstance and fight. I am no different from anyone else. I have seen my share of difficult situations; times when life threw curve balls that I wasn't expecting. In dealing with those times, I found myself alone, wanting answers, wanting someone, ANYONE, to come pull me through. But so many times all I heard was a deafening silence. Over and over...until I figured out how to listen. This is my story. It chronicles the circumstances that led to an unplanned teenage pregnancy and the emotional decision making that went along with that. It shows the struggle that goes through the mind of a teenager faced with growing up before their time, and the wisdom gained when realizing the magnitude of those decisions. This book reveals what it's like to come to that painful moment when we realize sometimes we cannot always do things in our own strength, but need to rely on something bigger than ourselves. While the details may be different, it could be your story too. Allow me to share the growing pains of my adolescent years and maybe, as you walk with me through them, you will find something that perhaps answers your own inner questions. And maybe, as you observe the many errors I chose to make, you will understand that things really can be turned around for the best, if you listen...be still....and hear the message in Silence that will help you make choices that matter.
'The real history of the mines ought to be written by a man still at work underground. The dust should still be in his throat as he was writing-it seemed to me-then it would be authentic. Despite my searching, I knew of no man who answered this description.' At the end of a detailed, seemingly dispassionate, description of a shift underground, Bert Coombes felt compelled to tell his readers why he had become a writer. Expressed here in characteristic style, with direct prose and use of everyday language and imagery, his convictions and fundamental purpose in writing remained guiding principles throughout his life and literary career. His work received widespread praise from critics such as J. B. Priestley and Cyril Connolly for its accessibility, authenticity and humanity. This anthology represents four types of writing - all published here for the first time: autobiography; the short story; the novel; and the diary. His clear and unsentimental eye allowed Coombes to observe the regular pattern and rhythm of life and to appreciate the way in which on any day there would have to be a consideration of matters relating to work, to politics, to domestic and personal issues, to the weather and world of nature, and to enriching diversions such his beloved violin. His vision is essentially one of balance and normality and through it we begin to understand how this society survived, how its citizens were not the stage army of historians, but real men and women.
A collection of essays that uses questions, hypotheses and concepts drawn from postcolonial theory to understand the culture and politics of post-devolution Wales. Beginning with discussions of how Wales as a nation has been understood historiographically, as well as historically, the book focuses in the next section on society and politics in post-devolution Wales. The final section of the volume considers Welsh cultural difference in terms of literature, the mass media, music, drama and the visual arts. Flexible in approach and diverse in their approaches, each contribution aims to stimulate ideas and suggest new ways of thinking about contemporary Wales. |
